Professional Practice and Modern Challenges
I am a Licensed Adolescent Thrive Practitioner. This practice is rooted in neuroscience and the recent developments in MRI scanning of the brain. It is helping us understand young people's development and behavior in terms of what is going on in the brain and body.
But why are we seeing increased mental health issues in our youth? Early adversity is increasingly being recognised as one of the primary causes of mental distress, leading to a poorly developed stress-regulation system. But today, regardless of the start some children have, the fact remains that the 21st century is a challenging time to grow up. Children and young people are subject to a host of pressures largely unknown by their parents' generation.
Pressures of the 21st Century can look like the relentless pressure to be thin or muscular, being sexualized at an ever-younger age, the constant exposure and scrutiny on social media, the threat of cyberbullying, the ready availability of internet pornography, less freedom and independence outside of the home, the pressure to succeed in high-pressure exams. Plus, all of the societal life pressures of divorce, bereavement, neglect, addiction and poverty.
The Thrive Approach: A Solution
So what can we do about it?
Despite the alarming rise in mental distress among our children, we know that early intervention is a powerful tool. The Thrive Approach provides reparative intervention where emotional and social development has been disrupted.
We do this through activities, learning new relational skills, insights into attachment theory, play, creativity, and the arts. This framework has proven results backed by science.
I recommend at least 3 session, but please don't feel pressured to book more than one to start as often its a great staring point to get your child to feel comfortable
